This present darkness

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

Some of you may recognize today’s title as the title of a 1986 book by Frank Peretti. In the book he writes about the struggle between demons and angles as the people in the book struggle to do the right thing. This verse should remind each of us that we are at war not with fellow humans but with Satan and the fallen angels that chose to follow him rather than God. Yes, we are fully capable of making bad choices on our own, but from the time of the fall Satan has been right there whispering in our ears to ignore God and do what seems right to us.

We spend our time thinking we need to fight against individuals when we need to spend it working to spread the Good News. We need to be planters not fighters. We need to love not hate. Once the seed is planted we need to let God take over and grow the seed into full blown belief. Confrontation only caused the other person to strike back or put up their defenses.

Unbelievers have been listening to the wrong voices. They hear the world telling them what to do and how to conform. They want to fit into the world’s system. Many have never heard the truth. The Bible does not call Satan the father of lies for nothing. He lies better than anyone else, sprinkling just enough truth into his lies to make them seem reasonable and true.

Most unbelievers have not made a conscious decision to follow Satan’s path they just do not know any better. They need the truth. It is up to us to provide it. We need to do it in a non confrontational way, always with love.

We don’t need to confront Satan. In fact it is best if we don’t. He is very powerful and when we think we can defeat Satan we come close to letting our pride get in the way. Our job is not to convert Satan but our fellow humans. Besides Satan has already lost. We have gotten a peek at the end of the story and the good guys win.

Have a blessed day,

David

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David
