Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth Redo?

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. – Job 38:1-4

Story headline in the Houston Chronicle of January 25, 2011 – Weather patterns produce chilling effect on scientists! Climatologists hesitant to blame global warming for latest quirks by Justin Gillis of the New York Times. It seems that the winter weather the past two years has not behaved itself as climate scientists would like and expect. Whether you believe the climate is warming or not is not the point. The climate debate is a good example of man’s hubris. We really believe there is nothing that we cannot eventually understand. Nothing that we cannot eventually control.

This is nothing new. The Fall is a result of Adam and Eve’s longing to be like God, to be all knowing, to be God. This has always been man’s wish and has always been our disappointment. We are finite creatures and as such are incapable of grasping what amount to infinite variables. Yes I know our climate is a finite system but it is so complex that we cannot predict what the weather will be like next week much less a hundred years from now. That is why the nightly weather forecast is done as percentages not exact numbers.

Yet we continue to believe that we are just a eureka moment from complete understanding. Why do we continue in this folly? Because we want to do it ourselves. We are like a four year old saying “no daddy, want to do it myself.”  But more than that, if we admit that there are something we will never understand then how can we get God out of the picture. And that is really the point. If man can understand all and control all then who needs God.

We want to do away with God but God keeps waiting on us to realize we are not God and never will be.

Have a blessed day,

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David
