Cast off the works of darkness

Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Romans 13:11-14

Not one person on this earth knows when Christ will return. Yet we always find someone who has calculated or claims to have received a revelation on when He will return. So, many get upset and they make preparations for the chosen day. Some sell all they have and make pilgrimages to some chosen spot to wait on Jesus’ return. The day comes and passes and they are left trying to explain why the calculations were wrong often setting another date. Then they are the ones, Jehovah Witnesses come to mind, that claim Jesus returned as predicted, he just came secretly and only the elect are aware.

God’s word tells us that when Christ returns it will be in glory and that all the world will know. When He returns it will not be secretly because He returns to judge the entire world. No one will be left out. No one will be unaware. No one will have an excuse. Yes it has been a long time but God’s timing is not ours. He allows time for everyone who will come to Him to come. He wishes that all would receive Him and that none might perish, but He will return.

What should Christians do? First we must ignore the false prophets that claim special or hidden knowledge. Jesus Himself said He did not the day of the coming so how can mere mortal men expect to know? No, we need to live each day as if this is the day of His return letting the world know the Good News. But, we also need to live as if His return will not happen in our lifetime. We need to continue to do the good work we are placed her to do. Spreading the Gospel to the entire world not running off to some mountain top to wait. We have work to do. The harvest is great and the workers are few, we need to get to work and keep on working until He comes to relieve us.

Have a blessed day,

David

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David
