The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins – A book review

I finally got around to the God delusion as I wanted to see what one of the top three modern atheists had to say. I was hoping to get new arguments in support of atheism, unfortunately I am still waiting. The most charitable thing I can say about the God Delusion is that it is a book long rant against God and religion. Dawkins is woefully ignorant in his understanding of philosophy, religions in general and Judaism and Christianity in particular as well as how to form a cogent argument.  I one thinks that sarcasm and derision are logical arguments then Dawkins has nothing to add to the debate.

Something I found especially notable l is how Dawkins cannot stand to have fellow scientists and atheist disagree with his views on God and religion. The late Steven J. Gould, one of my favorite authors, is singled out.

Least any atheists reading this review think my comments are colored by a Christian perspective I would direct them to the reviews  Specifically the one star review most of which are from fellow atheists who see this as diatribe rather than argument for atheism.

Finally as I went through The God delusion I could not help to think who had hurt this man so badly that he felt the need to spew out hatred toward religion.

For those interested in thoughtful writings on atheism I would suggest that you save your money and read some of the writings by Anthony Flew or Bertram Russell.

Have a blessed day,

PS at some point in the future I hope to read and review some of the writings by Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens.

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David
