A good foundation for the future

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:17-19

A few years back we did some remodeling on our home. One of the things we did was add a game room over the garage. When you add an addition to an upper story of a house you have two choices. First you can just add the addition and hope the foundation is strong enough or you can have a foundation expert come out and make sure the foundation will be able to hold the additional load. We choose to do the latter and once some piers were in place we did the addition. Seven years later and the foundation has handled the load.

A Christian’s life is much like a house. Without a solid foundation we will not be able to withstand the addition load that often gets placed on us. Just like a house, if the foundation is week it will crumble when things get too heavy for it. A Christian without a firm foundation can also crumble and become ineffective when things get to much to handle. So how do we get a good foundation?

Just as I would never think of shoring up a foundation by myself so we cannot get a good Christian foundation by ourselves. So how do we lay a good foundation? First we need a Bible with a translation that is easy to read and understand. Second we need to read the Bible. A dusty Bible is no good to anyone. Read it, make notes and highlight it, God gave us His word as a tool to use and live by. Find a church that teaches the Gospel. You can find twelve step programs and inspirational speakers all over but a good Gospel preaching church is priceless. Find Christian friends. They can help you in your walk and hold you accountable. Repeat as necessary.

Once you have a good foundation then start building on it. Share your faith. Use your spiritual gifts. Pray.

Strong foundations are important whether for our homes or our lives.

Have a blessed day,

David

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David
