And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. Genesis 2:8-14
Some spend so much time trying to locate the Garden of Eden on earth that they miss the fact that earth was created by God as a home to humanity. Even if we could locate Eden’s exact spot we would not find some utopia garden. Man’s sin changed the earth as well as us. Once Adam and Eve sought to become like God with knowledge of good and evil they brought sin on all the earth. No longer would life be easy, we would have to toil for our existence.
But that is not how it was in the beginning. There was work to do tending the garden but the plants put out abundant harvests. Life was good. We still see this goodness in creation be it a sunset or an eagle flying or maybe a butterfly or hummingbird. The fact that we managed to mess things up should not detract from the beauty and grandeur of God’s creation. Even with man’s sin the earth still manages to provide for us from its bounty.
Have a blessed day,
