He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” Genesis 3:1b-3
“The great masses will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one”, Adolf Hitler. Things really don’t change much. Satan the father of lies started his conversation with Eve with the Big Lie. He was the first, Hitler was just following Satan, nothing original there. But was Satan told Eve was original and it would lead to original sin.
God had told Adam and Eve that they could eat anything in the garden except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the center of the garden. Satan however was not concerned with the truth. He wanted Eve to think how unfair God was being. God is restricting what you can do, isn’t that just totally unfair? How dare He do that. You’re an adult you can make your own decisions.
Eve started out right. She told Satan that God had only put the fruit of one tree off limits. God even gave Adam and Eve His reason, they would die if they ate the fruit of this tree. Not only eat the fruit but just touching the tree would result in their death. Now, that sounds like a pretty good reason to leave that tree alone.
Of course anyone with a child knows that the surest way to get them to do something is to tell then they cannot do it. You tell your son that you don’t want them hanging around that Jimmy and you can bet that Jimmy will become their new best friend. Tell your daughter not to date that boy and rest assured he will be the one she just has to date. As humans we just seem to have a proclivity to want to do what someone tells us not to do. We just can’t seem to help it.
Satan always starts with a bit of the truth. In this case God told Adam and Eve not to eat from a certain tree. Then Satan expands the truth into his big lie such as God says not to eat any of the fruit from any tree. Once he gets his idea in your head he goes to work. Whispering things to you. Telling you that God is unfair. Telling you that you deserve this. Letting you know how unfair life has treated you. Little by little he moves you away from God and toward him.
However, we have a way out. Jesus can sustain us when Satan tempts us. He is there to forgive us when we fall for Satan’s temptations. Jesus will pick us up, dust us off and forgive us. He will set us back on the right road. We may not be stronger that Satan but we don’t have to be. We have Jesus and He is stronger that Satan. He is stronger than anyone.
Have a blessed day,
