Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 1 Corinthians 13:8-10
I have had some bad experiences in the past with today’s verses. Well-meaning people use these verses support their beliefs on prophecy and tongues. I lived through a church that came apart at the seams over this issue. It is sad that Christians use Paul’s writings about love to fight with each other. It also illustrates the point of not taking scripture out of context. Paul is writing about love not spiritual gifts.
Love never ends. God is love and just as God is eternal so is love. I think that Paul is reminding us that even when all spiritual gifts pass away and even the earth no longer is here and the universe ceases to exist, love will continue. God’s love will never end.
Christians need to stop arguing about things that have no eternal consequence and devote our time and energy to spreading the Gospel and the love of Christ. We need to think how it looks when we fight among ourselves. Yes we can debate the finer points of doctrine but when these debated result in loss of fellowship we have gone too far.
God is love. God loves us. God loves the world. God’s love is unconditional and God’s love never ends. We need to go and do likewise.
Have a blessed day,
