You are the head of gold

“This was the dream. Now we will tell the king its interpretation. You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all—you are the head of gold. Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you, and yet a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. And there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, because iron breaks to pieces and shatters all things. And like iron that crushes, it shall break and crush all these. And as you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom, but some of the firmness of iron shall be in it, just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay. And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle. As you saw the iron mixed with soft clay, so they will mix with one another in marriage, but they will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay. Daniel 2:36-43

If you pick up a Hebrew Bible, the Tanakh, and look for the book of Daniel in the Prophets section you will not find it. The Tanakh places Daniel in the Writings section. Today’s verses may show us why as this dream interpretation/prophesy does not directly pertain to Israel nor do the rest of the prophesies in this book. In the first half of Daniel, Daniel interprets for his capture while the last is end times prophesy.

In today’s verses Daniel gives Nebuchadnezzar the interpretation of the dream Daniel has just related to Nebuchadnezzar. God has shown Nebuchadnezzar what is going to happen in the future and what kingdoms will succeed his. Daniel describes the dream as a statue with a head of gold, chest and arms of silver, belly and thighs of bronze, the legs of iron and the feet of iron and clay mixture. Then a large rock is carved out of the earth and destroys the statue. Daniel then tells the king that the head of gold is the Babylonian kingdom.

While Daniel does not tell Nebuchadnezzar who the other kingdoms will be my studies have identified the other three kingdoms as follows: the Silver chest is the next empire and believed to be the Medo-Persians empire, the bronze belly and thighs are believed to be the Greek empire, the legs and feet are the Roman empire, with the feet the revived Roman empire. This last empire, the revived Roman empire is yet to be. The next two verses describe the stone and what it will do.

Have a blessed day,

David

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David
