Stop fighting a fight it’s already been won

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

I have really been enjoying Big Daddy Weave’s song Redeemed that is playing on the local Christian radio station, KSBJ. The words really speak to me, especially the first verse.

Seems like all I could see was the struggle

Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past

Bound up in shackles of all my failures

Wondering how long is this gonna last

Then You look at this prisoner and say to me “son

Stop fighting a fight it’s already been won”

I am redeemed, You set me free

So I’ll shake off these heavy chains

Wipe away every stain, now I’m not who I used to be

I am redeemed, I’m redeemed

I think about the many things I have done in my past and I at times, more times than I care to admit, obsess about these past sins. When I do this just as the lyrics in the song say I bind myself in shackles. I continue to put back on the chains I was released from by Jesus. I am fighting a fight that is over. John writes in chapter 19 verse 30 that on the cross Jesus proclaimed “it is finished”. The word John used is the Greek word tetelestai (τετέλεσται). A better translation that finished is paid in full.

So here are my sins that Jesus’ death on the cross stamped “PAID IN FULL” and I am continually acting as if there is something I need to do. In my case that thing is feeling guilty. Yes we need to admit our sins, we need to regret our sins and we need to ask for forgiveness of those sins but we do not need to remain in bondage to those sins. When we do a small part of us is saying that what Jesus did was not enough. We need to do something also. We need to continue to beat ourselves up over these past sins.

But maybe it isn’t just you keeping you in chains. Maybe another verse from this song also applies.

All my life I have been called unworthy

Named by the voice of my shame and regret

But when I hear You whisper, “Child lift up your head”

I remember, oh God, You’re not done with me yet

Is someone else trying to bring you down? Don’t listen to them listen to God. He has forgiven your sins. Yes you still have your sin nature but God is slowly changing you. Don’t listen to the naysayer listen to the King. As the final verse in this song says you are a new creation.

Because I don’t have to be the old man inside of me

‘Cause his day is long dead and gone

Because I’ve got a new name, a new life, I’m not the same

And a hope that will carry me home

I am redeemed, You set me free

So I’ll shake off these heavy chains

Wipe away every stain, ’cause I’m not who I used to be

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. God changes us the moment we accept Jesus’ work on the cross. That change continues till the day we die. Then we will be transformed. We need to let go of the old self and embrace the new self. We need to stop fighting the battle Jesus has already won and start fighting the battle to will others to Him.

Have a blessed day,

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David

John, would love to. Maybe it is because we had our kids late in life, our son just finished his sophomore year. 🙂 I just feel more in touch spiritually and willing to share with others.
