We have rebelled against him

To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice. And the curse and oath that are written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him. He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us, by bringing upon us a great calamity. For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem. As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and we have not obeyed his voice. And now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and have made a name for yourself, as at this day, we have sinned, we have done wickedly. Daniel 9:9-15

As I read today’s verses I could not help but think how this prayer describes our world today. All across the globe people are in active rebellion against God. It seems that not much has changed in the 2,500 years since Daniel prayed this pray. Everywhere one looks we see people moving farther and farther from God.

What is a Christian supposed to do? First and foremost we need to live our lives differently from others. We need to set the example. Not in a judgmental way but by living as God wants us to live. That may mean we will have to avoid certain activities and places. We need to watch our language. Avoid off-color jokes. Maybe miss some popular movie of entertainer. That doesn’t mean we need to stay home and draw the blinds. We need to be out in the world showing the world that people can have fun and yet still honor God.

We need to vote with our pocketbook. Support movies that do not celebrate ungodly behavior. Let the film industry know that they can make money producing family entertainment. Be choosy in your reading. Support companies that champion Christian values. Invite friends to church and support your church.

What society is today did not happen overnight. It was a gradual process. In film and TV it started with a few “innocent” curse words that everyone used and a little more passion in the love scenes and over the years we end up with soft-core porn in evening TV and not just on cable. Magazines that were kept under the counter gradually appeared on the racks and no one complained. And of course the internet opened a world where every type of perversity was readily available in the privacy of the home.

It is possible that we will never turn things back to where they once were but that does not mean we stop trying. We need more Daniels that will pray for healing of society and a return to God. Jesus did not give us an easy task but easy or not we need to keep working.

Have a blessed day,

David

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David
