Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. Hebrews 8:1-6
The writer of Hebrews makes a point in today’s verses that we no longer have need of earthly priests to make intercession with God. We now have an eternal high priest who sits at God’s right hand. Jesus is our priest in heaven not some earthly tabernacle or temple.
When Moses had the tabernacle built he did so according to the plans and dimensions that he received from God. When Solomon built the temple he also did so according to the plans and dimensions that he received from God. As magnificent as these two places to worship God were they are a poor copy only a shadow of the true temple of God in heaven. From the grandest cathedral to the most ornate modern church all are but a dim reflection of what God has built in heaven.
The Book of Revelation gives us, as well as words can, a description of God’s temple in heaven as it descends to the New Earth. It will be like nothing we have ever seen and could ever imagine. It is beyond description in human language. From this great temple Jesus will be our high priest forever.
Have a blessed day,
