Do not be afraid

Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. Luke 1:8-13

Today we have Zechariah going about his business at the temple and by chance he is chosen to burn incense in the temple. Nothing unusual, just doing his job. Then the angel Gabriel shows up. Things are no longer ordinary and they are about to change.

Angels always fascinate us. Many people claim to have seen angels. Now I do not know if what they say is true or not but if what God tells us in the Bible is true and I believe it is then seeing an angel is not a cuddly feel good experience. Every time an angel shows up, with the exception of when they are disguised as men, the people they appear to are frightened. In fact just as in today’s verses the first words out of the angels is some form of do not be afraid. Now maybe the angels that appear now are more user friendly. I think not. When a creature as powerful as one of God’s angels appear with no warning we cannot help but be awed and afraid.

Two of the more famous appearances of angels after New Testament times are the angel Gabriel appearing to Muhammad and the angle Moroni appearing to Joseph Smith. In both instances these two men seemed to take this sudden appearance of an angel in stride. In both cases it seems neither man had ever had a prior encounter with angels.

Am I the only one who finds it odd that when God sent Gabriel to announce to Zechariah the birth of John, Jesus’ messenger, that Gabriel frightened Zechariah but when the same angel appeared to Muhammad it is business as usual? Or when Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith, Smith is ready to take dictation. As a side not, when Joseph Smith described Moroni he said Moroni appeared as an angel of light. Any idea what other angel is described that way? If you guessed Satan or Lucifer you are correct.

Angels appear to us as so powerful that in many instances the person seeing one falls to the ground in adoration. It is up to the angel to tell us to get up for they are servants of God just as we are. But angels never come with ordinary news. So in today’s verses the news is also unexpected. Elizabeth will bear a son and Zechariah is to call that son John. I bet you could have knocked Zechariah over with a feather.

Have a blessed day,

David

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David

One Response to Do not be afraid

  1. We know David by the confirmation of Scripture that only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies the rest had to wait outside, which is what you shared in your message, the other Priests only served till they were 50 and were not allowed to do what Zechariah did to make atonement, they were never allowed to enter the Holy of Holies but the Pagans had rituals that were set up the same and even tied rope around their leg or foot, in case they were not worthy but their priests were chosen by the governing power and of course they did not follow God’s guidelines, given through David.

Now honestly David if you were in your 70’s or 80’s or even older and an Angel said to you that you were going to have a baby, would you not be just a little surprised, Shara laughed, Mary questioned, but Abraham and Joseph accepted without objection or question, although Abraham did doubt later and listened to Sahara and so did what the Pagans did but latter as we know he came to his senses and when tested stood firm.

But just in case David they are needed, I will make some baby booties for you Lol!

As you said David we are not to worship Angels or seek them for guidance, we Worship God and pray to Him not Angels, we seek Jesus, He is our Shepherd and will lead us into all Truth and so we will walk as He did by the empowering of The Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 5:1-3 5 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in Love, as Christ also hath Loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.

1John 2:26-28 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is Truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.

Colossians 2 :2 -3 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in Love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is True, and we are in Him that is True, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the True God, and eternal life.

John 15:14-15 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.(KJV)

Matthew 10:26-28 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops (KJV) ( Perhaps our Computers)

Psalm 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you shall go. I will guide you with Mine eye.

Christian Love from both of us – Anne.
