A divided household falls

Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. Luke 11:14-23

In today’s verses we find Jesus expelling a mute demon from a man. Some in the crowd accuse Jesus of casting out the demon with the help of Beelzebul , the price of the demons. We have Jesus doing a good thing and some want to put an evil cast on His actions. Then Jesus does something we should try to emulate. Jesus shows them that what they are saying does not make sense. Why would Satan cast out Satan? Why would Satan work against himself?

Sometimes we in the church seem to be against each other and many times we are. We take little things and make mountains out of them. We take a verse out of the Bible and the lack of a verse and make doctrines that separate us from each other. These are what I like to call “the what color is the carpet” issues. Those are doctrines that have nothing to do with salvation. Churches split over minor points with sadly frequent regularity.

One issue I saw firsthand and how it ruined a church was spiritual gifts and if they are still in force today. I have great Christian friends who come down on both sided of this issue. Some say they have ceased today while others say they are still in force. Yet, whether we are speaking about tongues, prophesy or healing they do not have one iota salvation effect. Those who practice these gifts are not any more saved than those that do not. Yet a church my family attend split of this very issue and it became so bad most found new church homes. We argue about when or if there will be a rapture. Will Jesus come back before the tribulation or if the tribulation will even happen or that it already has happened. No matter what side of any of these issues you believe they will not save you.

Jesus and Jesus alone saves us. It is that acceptance of Him and the works He did that save us. So instead of spending our time fighting among ourselves maybe we should turn that energy to proclaiming to Gospel to those who have yet to believe. Jesus tells us Satan is smart enough not to fight against himself. We need to wise up and do the same. And it is not that the church will fall, Jesus tells us “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock1 I will build my church, and the gates of hell2 shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18 ESV) our infighting will not derail God’s plan but it makes Satan happy as we are expending energy that would be better spent doing Kingdom work.

Have a blessed day,

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David

  1. Sorry to hear about your Computer crash David, I have had more than a few myself and they can be frustrating especially when you loose all your Inbox.

The reason why there is division is as Paul said, there are those who do not believe God they believe man, all Scripture is inspired by God but some reject it for their own understanding based on their own experiences or what they have wrongly been taught by others who have done the same. Satan cannot understand God’s Truth, he does not have The Holy Spirit, instead he distorts it, adds to it and deletes.

There is only one Truth David and that is God’s and we are to stand firm in that Truth and if we have the mind of Christ we will but we don’t argue with those who reject His Truth when they are corrected, we move on.

God never tells us to agree to disagree but to bring our differences to Him and He will show who is in error but some who have fleshy pride would prefer not to know they are in error regardless of the confirmation of the Scriptures when understood by the empowering of The Holy Spirit.

What you mentioned as differences are confirmed as reality in Scripture but Carnal or Natural man won’t understand them as we see confirmed in the Scripture below but with God’s empowering through the Holy Spirit and having asked for and received His wisdom and Trusting Jesus to lead us into all understanding and needed knowledge, we will not be deceived.

1 Corinthians 2:9-16 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that Love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth but which the Holy Ghost teacheth, comparing spiritual things with Spiritual. But the Natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are Spiritually discerned. But he that is Spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the Mind of the Lord, that he may instruct Him? but we have the Mind of Christ.

Christian Love from both of us – Anne.
