As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:27-28
The people kept trying to put Jesus’ family in the spotlight but Jesus always brought the conversation back to the important part of His ministry, bringing everyone back to a relationship with God. We want to elevate people and Jesus wants us to put God front and center. Whether we are praying to saints, elevating Mary to a godlike stature or putting our pastors and ministers on pedestals none of this is what God tells us to do in His Word.
No, what Jesus tells us in today’s verses is “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” The blessing that Jesus has for everyone who chooses it is found in the Word of God and it is the salvation and right relationship each can have if we follow God’s Word and accept the free gift of salvation offered to each who chooses to accept it.
Whether it is Mary the mother of Jesus, any of Jesus’ disciples or any person down through the ages each and every one has the opportunity to be blessed by God. All we need do is accept what has been freely given.
Have a blessed day,
