“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Luke 12:35-40
It seems that every few years someone comes up with a new calculation that shows the date Jesus is going to return. One of the tenants of the Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW’s) is that Jesus was to have returned once they had 144,000 baptized members. As with all the other predictions their prediction came and went with a return. Not to be dismayed the JW’s said that Jesus had in fact returned but His return was invisible. So much for coming in the clouds.
People have sold all their possession and quit their jobs on the predictions of some pastor or minister who was adamant that Jesus was to return on a specific date. And every time they have been disappointed and the prognosticator goes back to their formulas to begin another calculation. Now as much as anyone I wish for Jesus’ soon return. Unfortunately His return is not for me to know.
When people forecast dates for Jesus’ return they are ignoring Jesus own words. He told the disciples and us on multiple occasions that no one knows the hour of His return not even the Son. Why would one try to do something that Jesus tells us is impossible to do? But the more serious matter is why someone would tell others something Jesus clearly tells us is unknowable by us.
When Christians do things like set dates for Jesus return they damage not only their own credibility but that of the church. It makes the unbeliever even more confident that we do not know what we are talking about. We need to be like the servant in today’s verses. We need to be always ready for the Master’s return no matter when He returns. As I have written before we need to live our lives as if Jesus will return right now and as if He will return a thousand years from now. Always be ready but never stop doing the Lord’s work until the time He calls us home.
Have a blessed day,
