The Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect

“Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Luke 12:35-40

It seems that every few years someone comes up with a new calculation that shows the date Jesus is going to return. One of the tenants of the Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW’s) is that Jesus was to have returned once they had 144,000 baptized members. As with all the other predictions their prediction came and went with a return. Not to be dismayed the JW’s said that Jesus had in fact returned but His return was invisible. So much for coming in the clouds.

People have sold all their possession and quit their jobs on the predictions of some pastor or minister who was adamant that Jesus was to return on a specific date. And every time they have been disappointed and the prognosticator goes back to their formulas to begin another calculation. Now as much as anyone I wish for Jesus’ soon return. Unfortunately His return is not for me to know.

When people forecast dates for Jesus’ return they are ignoring Jesus own words. He told the disciples and us on multiple occasions that no one knows the hour of His return not even the Son. Why would one try to do something that Jesus tells us is impossible to do? But the more serious matter is why someone would tell others something Jesus clearly tells us is unknowable by us.

When Christians do things like set dates for Jesus return they damage not only their own credibility but that of the church. It makes the unbeliever even more confident that we do not know what we are talking about. We need to be like the servant in today’s verses. We need to be always ready for the Master’s return no matter when He returns. As I have written before we need to live our lives as if Jesus will return right now and as if He will return a thousand years from now. Always be ready but never stop doing the Lord’s work until the time He calls us home.

Have a blessed day,

We are having internet problems again so posts and comments answers will come sometime later.

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David

  1. Yes for many David, Jesus will come unawares like a thief in the night but not so for us who believe in Him, as the Scripture below confirm, we are to watch for the signs as Jesus told us to do..

1Thessalonians 5 :2 -6 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the Children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

Yes it is True David there are those who have reckoned wrongly about Jesus return but I knew it was not True because there is still some Prophesy that has to be fulfilled before Jesus’ return as shown in Revelation but we are seeing the Birth signs and Jesus said as we see confirmed in the Scriptures (Mathew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21) when we see these things happening that Jesus mentioned all around the world and we are now, we will be the generation that sees Him return.

Yes Anne, Jesus tells us we will know the season but the exact time is unknown to all of us. Only God the father know the exact time. So we must always be ready. Have a blessed day and New year. David
