Whoever believes has eternal life

Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” John 6:47-51

When we are witnessing to unbelievers we love to use Paul. We take the seeker down the Roman’s road or show them Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Don’t get me wrong, Paul is a great source to help the seeker, but why not go directly to the source? In today’s verses Jesus tells us what we need to do to be saved. He says “whoever believes has eternal life. Believe in what, believe in Him?

It really is just that simple, believe. God could have made it more complex and I think most of us wish that He would have. Believe, that just seems too good to be true. There must be a catch, nothing that great can be that simple. So we add things. You have to be baptized in order to be saved or you have to be baptized in just this way. You have to follow this or that rule or tradition in order to be saved. You have to confess at just the right time to be saved. Maybe you need to attend church on this special day to be saved or attend at least this many times. It seems there is no end to our conditions for salvation. If you drink alcohol, dance, play cards or gamble you can’t be saved.

Some have formed whole new religions because what the Bible teaches is just too simple. So they add rules so you have to travel to this particular spot on earth to be saved. Maybe if you follow all the rules you will not only be saved but become like God. But why stop at rules, just let everyone be saved just add different levels of salvation? Read this tract and be saved or this particular translation of the Bible or this additional holy book or writing and be saved.

We try so hard for something that is so easy. Believe and have eternal life. Jesus gave us one condition for eternal life, believe in Him. Nothing more and nothing less. God makes it so simple, it is man that tries to make it complex. Believe.

Have a blessed day,

David

About dwwork

The name of this blog is taken from 1 Peter 3:13 - “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience. This verse became special to me over ten years ago when I was asked to teach an adult Sunday school class on Christian apologetics. This interest grew over the years to the point that I took some graduate level classes in apologetics. I think the best way to be prepared to give and answer to everyone who asks is to know scripture. It is my hope that through these short devotionals the reader will become more familiar with each verse. I have tried when possible to make them personal hoping in some small way to show that God’s word written over two thousand years ago is still relevant today. In the writing of these short devotionals I have been able to better understand how God’s word impacts my life. It is my hope that you too will come closer to our Lord Jesus and develop a closer relationship with Him. Finally, if the reader finds anything in conflict with scripture please let me know. God’s word is the final authority always overrules anything I might write. David
